Background

A customer in the roofing materials manufacturing industry needed a non-nuclear gauging solution to replace two gamma backscatter scanners. The customer’s current system was costly to maintain. Specialized licensing requirements also required a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to be present. Gamma backscatter systems are also slow and less accurate than newer nondestructive testing technology. The customer was using a different supplier, but was not happy with the service and turned to Quad Plus for a better solution.

Quad Plus Solution

The Quad Plus Gauging team provided the customer with a nondestructive testing technology solution. The terahertz sensor in their new system does not produce any harmful ionizing radiation. That means employees can safely use the system without special licensing requirements or additional personnel.

The new solution scans 9 times faster than the previous system and provides 1000 measurement updates per second. The upgraded system provides faster scanning and higher-resolution sample images through advanced thickness sensor technology. This supports tighter process control, reduced material usage, and improved product consistency through nondestructive testing technology.

The upgraded thickness measurement system improves process visibility across the production line. Faster measurement updates allow operators to identify variation sooner and make more precise production adjustments. This improves material consistency while reducing excess product usage and waste.

By transitioning away from nuclear gauging technology, the customer also simplified long-term system ownership. The new solution reduced administrative overhead for compliance, training, and specialized safety procedures. It also provided a more modern, easier-to-maintain measurement platform.

The Role of Thickness Measurement Systems in Roofing Production

Thickness measurement systems help roofing manufacturers maintain consistent product quality and tighter process control. Continuous thickness measurement provides real-time feedback. Operators can identify process drift and make adjustments before material falls out of specification.

Accurate thickness monitoring with nondestructive testing technology also helps reduce material waste and improve production efficiency. Modern nondestructive technology provides a safer alternative to older nuclear-based gauging systems and simplifies long-term operation and maintenance.

How Terahertz Imaging Systems Enhance Roofing Material Measurement

Terahertz imaging systems provide high-speed, non-contact thickness measurement without harmful ionizing radiation. This eliminates many of the licensing, compliance, and safety concerns associated with older nuclear gauging technologies.

Modern terahertz thickness sensor technology delivers faster scan rates and higher-resolution measurement data. In roofing production, this improves thickness monitoring, supports tighter process control, and helps reduce excess material usage.

Terahertz measurement systems can evaluate layered roofing materials without physical contact. This helps manufacturers maintain more consistent coating and material thickness profiles.

Optimizing Roofing Production with Weight Sensor Technology

Weight sensor technology helps manufacturers monitor coating application rates and material consistency during roofing production. When combined with web thickness measurement systems, operators gain better visibility into overall process performance.

Integrated thickness control systems support tighter material tolerances, reduced waste, and more stable production. Historical measurement data also helps manufacturers improve process repeatability and long-term product consistency.
